A dutiful protector of the space he inhabits and all that reside within it, Lares prefers to be treated as a member of the family. He appreciates being invited to join in family meals, and anticipates acknowledgment for his protection in the form of a simple greeting or thank you whenever he is passed by.
Lares is an original sculpture from Michael Upton’s series, House Guardians. He can be placed inside or outside the home to serve as a guardian, patron, and protector of all within his domain.
Born of a pure desire to play and a love for folk and outsider art, each House Guardian is handmade by the artist. Lares' face is made from mortar, his eyes from pewter, and his base created using the traditional Japanese art of Shou Sugi Ban, a technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire.
